BICULTURAL IDENTITY | BELONGING
First and second generation Americans experience particular challenges in adapting to conflicting social norms and values between their native culture and the dominant American culture. The process of immigration and acculturation involves loss of ancestral home, and often, loss of family that produces emotional distress and confusion around cultural and ethnic identity. You feel "different" and wonder how you can you fit in. Family expectations regarding cultural norms, values, and traditional gender roles can create intergenerational conflict. Strained family relationships worsen the sense of isolation and lack of belonging due to feeling torn by your allegiance to two or more communities.
I have first-hand experience with issues related to immigration and dislocation and adjusting to new cultural norms, gender roles, and belief systems. When you share your experiences with me, I will listen with warmth, compassion and understanding. I provide a safe and nurturing space in which we can explore your personal and family history, you can grieve the loss of your ancestral homeland, and you can create and embrace a new home that feels secure, comforting, and joyful. Together we can explore how you define your new identity by finding the balance between your native and adopted culture that feels true and celebrates both. I help you adapt to living in a new culture while staying connected to your family and cultural roots, so you feel whole and feel a sense of belonging and interrelatedness.
