FOR THERAPISTS

THERAPY + CONSULTATION FOR THERAPISTS

For therapists, it is incredibly fulfilling to help people overcome emotional hardships, feel a greater sense of mental well-being, and heal from painful life experiences. Healers also need help to continue doing their work. I provide personal therapy and consultation.

A WORD ABOUT BEING A THERAPIST OF COLOR

Being a therapist of color presents unique challenges as therapy is a predominantly white field. When you are a new therapist of color, it can feel isolating to be the one and only in grad programs, clinical institutes, and training programs with a lack of diverse mentorship, limited access to culturally relevant training, and pressure to represent an entire community of color. You may be confronted with how to address microaggressions from clients and colleagues, to handle skepticism about your competence due to implicit bias, and to bear the weight of clients' racial/cultural trauma. As a therapist of color, I had to find my way and find people to support my journey. I’d like to be a support to you. You don’t have to go it alone.

THERAPY FOR PRE-LICENSED + NEW THERAPISTS

Sitting with people and listening to them describe their struggles and trauma can take a toll on the therapist’s mental health. Even seasoned therapists can experience compassion fatigue or burnout, which interferes with their ability to be fully present and provide the level of care they wish to provide to their clients, and their clients need.

If you are a therapist-in-training or a licensed therapist in your first few years learning how to hold clients, the mental toll can become overwhelming. As a new therapist, you are in a more susceptible position to experience  symptoms of fatigue, such as insomnia, anxiety, exhaustion, depression, etc. This is why it is essential that you have an intentional self-care practice. Personal therapy is the cornerstone of your self-care practice.

I work with pre-licensed therapists and licensed therapists within the first few years to foster your professional development as a clinician and to support you with your personal life challenges.
  • Therapy as an experience of vulnerability. As a therapy provider, it is relevant for you to understand the ‘experience’ of going to therapy. I’ll provide a safe space where you can experience the vulnerability of opening up to a therapist. This experiential knowledge helps you relate and empathize with your clients on a more authentic level, i.e., connect to how your clients’ feel when they regularly share their feelings and are vulnerable with you.
  • Exploring biases. As clients share their experiences and emotions with you, I’ll help you explore and process your own unresolved conflicts that may arise. I’ll help you identify and understand your blind spots and triggers. This is both beneficial for your professional and personal development, as you will become conscious of your biases and the way they affect how you react to your clients' issues. For example, you may hold unconscious biases related to issues like sexuality, substance abuse, political affiliation, or race. Addressing biases helps you become the best therapist you can be for your clients.
  • Boundaries. As an empathetic person, eager to help your clients, you may begin overextending yourself. I’ll help you create and maintain healthy boundaries.
  • Modeling. In your therapy with me, you’ll be exploring and creating a vision for the kind of therapist you want to be and how you want to work with your own clients.
  • Personal challenges. Personal therapy will help you navigate the challenges that occur in your own life, such as transitional periods, relationship issues, family conflict, loss, and grief.

CONSULTATION FOR NEW THERAPISTS

When you become a licensed therapist, you are filled with excitement to work with clients on your own. At some point, you may begin to feel anxious or to doubt your ability as a therapist. It’s completely natural as you are still forming your identity and developing confidence in your clinical skills.

I will help you find your voice and become sturdier in your identity as therapist. I will help you define your clinical perspective and approach grounded in your theoretical framework.

As with therapy, finding a good fit for clinical consultation is essential. We may be a good fit if:
  • Your clients are individual adults or couples
  • Your clients identify as South Asian, Black, people of color, biracial, LGBTQ+
  • You want to develop a psychodynamic and relational orientation

If you are interested in consultation, call me at (510) 629-0131 or fill out my form.
